CLMN in Lumban

LUMBAN

Lumban is one of the oldest towns in the province of Laguna. The provinces capital town, Santa Cruz, as well as Cavinti and the famous Pagsanjan, were once part of Lumban.

Lumban got its name from Lumbang Tree.  The lumbang tree was at that time the chief source of oil for lighting and for culinary purposes. Why people of Lumban at present do not even plant and grow the tree and why they no longer use even a drop of lumbang oil, is still a nagging question to the present generation. Some wags say lumbang oil could be a good cure for scabies and other skin diseases.

Lumban is also known as the Embroidery Capital of the Philippines.  As the third largest municipality in Laguna, Lumban with a land area of 9,685 hectares is endowed with excellent water resources and land suitable for urban development, agricultural production, agri-based light industries, and tourism development.

The town is blessed with relatively cool temperature at an average of 24 degrees Celsius and rainfall which is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year.

CLMN in Lumban

In April 2006, CLEAR conducted an ecological camp Kilos Kabataan Para Sa Lawa for the municipality of Lumban.  Fifteen high school students from various schools in the municipality had participated.  Lake monitoring by communities was one of the activities introduced to the campers.  Orientation and lectures on "What is Secchi Disk" and "How Useful it is in Lake Monitoring?" and on the procedure for water quality monitoring using secchi disk were part of the program.  A field demonstration of sampling procedure was also conducted at the Laguna de Bay.

In June 2006, coinciding with the celebration of World Environment Day, the first CLEAR Youth Network Congress was held  in University of Rizal Systems in Tanay.  The ecocamp graduates of Lumban met other graduates from Tanay, Los Baos and Muntinlupa to strengthen the partnership and plan common activities towards lake conservation.  One of the activities agreed upon by the participants was the monitoring of water quality of Laguna de Bay.  This aimed to increase awareness of the community of the importance of the lake in their daily lives.

During the 2nd CLEAR Youth Network Congress on 14-15 July 2007, the coordinators of the participating youth from various cities of Muntinlupa and San Pablo and municipalities of Los Baos, Tanay and Lumban had a meeting to discuss issues, concerns and recommendations about CYN implementation especially the lake monitoring.  Ms. Victoria Almario, the coordinator of the Lumban young delegates attended the meeting.

On 01 September 2007, an orientation-meeting was held at the Municipal Hall of Lumban to jumpstart the lake monitoring activity (Community Lake Monitoring Network) in Lumban.  It was attended by thirteen students from various schools in the municipality and was hosted and coordinated by the municipal government of Lumban through its municipal planning officer, Mr. Sotero Himoc.  The teachers/ coordinators, Ms. Victoria Almario and Mr. Angelito Atienza, were also present.  During the meeting, a briefing-orientation on the CLMN was conducted, and the use of secchi disc was demonstrated, as well as how to record monitoring data.
