SIBOL 2007
The Cultural Center of the Philippines mounts "Sibol
2007" on April 22, 2007, with the theme,
"Culture for Life," emphasizing the role
of artists and the cultural sector in realizing
the International Earth Day theme of "Stewardship
in Action."
"Sibol
2007" will begin at 7 a.m. with all
employees dispersed throughout the Complex
grounds in a cleanup operation, which is a
symbolic gesture of environmental stewardship on
a personal level. This will be followed by
a shared breakfast with families at the CCP
front lawn and an opening program, directed by
Ariel Yonzon, featuring Ballet Philippines
artists and children in an interactive dance to
unveil an outdoor installation art project by
the renowned environmental artist, Junyee.
Entitled "Angud," Junyee's art project will
consist of some three thousand pieces of Angud,
which is the end part of tree trunks discarded
during illegal logging operations. These pieces
represent the denudation of our forests that, in
turn, cause mudslides and land erosion, bringing
tragic consequences. Spread throughout the
front lawn's two-hectare open ground, the
installation alludes to a graveyard of mute
witnesses to a continuing crime against nature.
Sibol 2007 continues from 10 am to
12 noon with a forum on the theme, "Culture
for Life," organized by the CCP Artistic
Director, Nanding Josef, with Haribon as
convener. This will involve movers and shakers
of the environment from the private and
government sectors sharing their success stories
and plans for future efforts. Complementing this
forum is an exhibition of landscape architect
Paolo Alcazaren's designs for the CCP Liwasang
Kalikasan project launched last year. Painters
and visual artists shall hold on-the-spot
painting sessions along the promenade area
facing Manila Bay. Organized by Winner
Foundation to draw in onlookers and passersby,
this event will culminate in an exhibit of
finished paintings at the CCP Little Theatre
Lobby, adjacent to the audiovisual room where a
screening of the film, "An Inconvenient Truth,"
is hosted by the CCP Media Arts Division.
A portion from the sale of the paintings shall
be donated to the CCP Liwasang Kalikasan.
"Sibol
2007" will culminate in the evening with
a light and sound show, highlighting the urgent
need to conserve and protect the environment.
This event shall be held at the CCP front area
which includes the lawn, the ramp, the fountain
lagoon, and the façade, all in all, serving as
stage and backdrop for a spectacular display of
visual projections, a 20-minute art film on the
environment, musical numbers and acrobatic
performances directed by Chris Millado, with the
participation of artists and the CCP resident
companies. This event is envisioned to
attract crowds and mass media coverage to spread
the environmental message on a wider scale.
See
you at the CCP on April 22! |
