Various
stakeholders of Ticao Island, Masbate gathered on 29
May 2008 at the San Jacinto Central School for the Ticao
Island Environment Congress. Issues and concerns such
as destructive fishing activities, quarrying,
coastal mining (sand and gravel), coral degradation,
deforestation, poor agricultural practices, solid waste
management were discussed to come up with local actions that will focus on the connectivity maintaining
healthy island ecosystem and their contributions to
improvement of human health (life) and as source of clean
water, food and livelihood.
The holding of the event,
which was spearheaded by the local government of San
Jacinto, have these objectives -
-
to raise the awareness of the all stakeholders on the state
of the environment and natural resources of Ticao
Island: importance, functions and benefits, present
status and the need for their conservation
-
to craft an Island-wide vision and agenda for sustainable
development of Ticao Island.

to create a critical mass of local advocates that will
promote this local vision and agenda
-
to identify priority activities for immediate
implementation.
