COASTAL ZONE AND FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS
NATIONAL R and D STATEMENT
The R and D programs under the coastal zone and freshwater ecosystems are geared towards conservation and sustainable development of resources for optimum benefits.
PROBLEMS/ISSUES/RESEARCHABLE AREAS
Degradation/deterioration of coastal & freshwater ecosystems including caves
- Regeneration and rehabilitation strategies for coastal/inland areas/estuarines (mangrove, coral reef, sand dunes) and freshwater (lakes & rivers) ecosystems
- Impact assessment & coastal forest influences studies
- Studies on coastal zone & freshwater ecosystems-related to negative environment phenomena (e.g. seawater intrusion, eutrophication, red tide, water pollution, etc.)
- Natural resource accounting/environmental auditing
- Cave management and conservation (coastal)
- Nursery/seed technology standards
Inadequate information on coastal and freshwater resources, including caves
- Biodiversity assessment
- Nutrient cycling studies
- Development of computer-based simulation modeling using GIS
Overexploitation/unregulated harvesting/utilization of coastal and aquatic resources
- Conservation management and proper utilization of coastal forest and aquatic resources
- Socioeconomic studies
- Ecotourism and recreation studies/cave tourism
- Community-based coastal resource management (CBCRM)
Inadequate regulatory measure and/or weak enforcement of existing regulations
- Policy assessment/studies
