The 3rd CLEAR
Youth Network Congress was held on 26 & 27 July
2008 which gathered the CLEAR Eco-Camp graduates from the
municipalities of Tanay, Los Baņos, Lumban, and Pangil and
cities of Muntinlupa and San Pablo. The event served as the
venue to exchange ideas, information practices and activities on
lake conservation. With its theme,
Wetlands and Culture, workshops were conducted and
lecture on the relationship between wetlands and culture was given
to build the capacity of the youth delegates to implement lake
conservation activities efficiently and effectively in their
respective schools and communities.
The
Congress, which was attended by 57 youth from the lakeshore
communities of Laguna de Bay, was held in Camp Allen Development &
Training Center in Santa Cruz, Laguna.

CLEAR joined the
Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources and other institutions in
celebrating the International day for Biological Diversity.
With the theme "Biodiversity and Agriculture", the 7-day celebration
(19-25 May 2008) highlighted the importance of sustainable
agriculture, not only to preserve biodiversity but also to ensure
that there is food to feed the Filipinos, maintain agricultural
livelihood, and enhance human well being into the 21st century and
beyond.
CLEAR participated in the 1-week Trade Fair and Exhibit at the Ninoy
Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center that showcased biodiversity, organic
agricultural products and initiatives addressing biodiversity
issues.
CLEAR also took part in the holding of the Forum on Biodiversity and
Agriculture at the Visitors' Center of the Ninoy Aquino Parks and
Wildlife Center, which discussion was focused on "Safeguarding
Biodiversity and Securing Food for the Filipinos".

To call attention to the sad state of Laguna de Bay specifically the
uncontrolled proliferation of informal settlers and to gather
support for its conservation, Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA)
spearheaded a Bike Caravan held last 26-27 April 2008.
The two-day Bike Caravan around Laguna de Bay started in Market!
Market!(Pasig City) and ends in Club Manila East (Taytay, Rizal).
CLEAR awarded the youngest cyclist who finished the race. The
cash prize was split between the youngest male finisher
Shan Carlo Calavnan (9 years old, of the Biak-na-Bato Group) and the
youngest female finisher Mary Ann Gomez (21 year old, of the Cycling
Advocates & Adventures Group). Gift packs were also given as consolation prizes.

Twenty-four high school students from Pangil, Laguna participated in the EcoCamp
conducted by CLEAR in partnership with the municipal government of
Pangil. The EcoCamp - Pangil, which aimed to develop young
stewards for the environment specifically that of the Laguna de Bay
region, was held at the Green House in Pangil, Laguna on 27 - 29
February 2008.
The 24 campers came from various schools: Balian National High School,
Dambo National High School, Liceo de Pakil, Siniloan National High
School, and Laguna State Polytechnic University). Each of the
eight (8) barangays of Pangil was represented by 3 participants.

At the CHE Youth Camp 2008: Youth Leaders and Environmental
Stewards in Action, Ms. Amy Lecciones of the Society for the Conservation of
Philippine Wetlands shared and discussed with the group
of freshmen how different sectors can work together to achieve a common
goal - the conservation of Laguna de Bay, and the
initiatives of CLEAR in conserving the lake's
environment and resources.
Organized by College of Human Ecology of the University of the
Philippines - Los Baņos, the camping was held on 26-27 January 2008 at the
Training Center of the Laguna Lake Development Authority
in Calauan, Laguna. Its objective, among others, is to inculcate the
value of environmental stewardship among the freshmen
students.

CLEAR became the topic of discussion at the International
Conference for Managing Wetlands for Sustainable Development
held in Trang City, Thailand on 09-11 January 2008 when Ms.
Amy Lecciones of the Society for the
Conservation of Philippine Wetlands presented at the conference
"Engaging Multi-Stakeholder Participation in Lake Conservation".
The theme of the conference was "community participation, co-management and empowerment in
successful management and sustainable use (including conflict
resolution and financial/policy instruments)". |
