The 5th CLEAR Youth Network Congress was held on 31 July - 01
August 2010. As part of the
celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity, the theme
Wetlands and Biodiversity focused on enhancing the
awareness of the youth on the value of biological diversity
and its significance in their daily lives. The participants
had an exposure trip to the Makiling Botanical Gardens.
The Congress, which was attended by 70 students from lakeshore
communities of Laguna de Bay, was held at the Auditorium of the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau of the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources, University of the
Philippines Campus, Los Baños, Laguna. |

attendance in the Sustainable Wetlands Management: A
Workshop on the Protection of Diverse Mangrove Forests and
Promotion of Energy-Saving Lamps in Sri Lanka |

Ms. Lecciones was
invited by the Nagenahiru Foundation in Sri Lanka and the
Global Nature Fund to do a presentation about the CLEAR
Youth Ecological Camp as a strategy for education and
awareness-raising for Laguna de Bay and its environs. The
workshop, which was held on 13-17 June 2010 at
Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka, was attended by about forty
participants from India, Cambodia, Thailand, Australia,
United Kingdom, Germany and Sri Lanka. The workshop was
intended to facilitate the sharing of experiences among
wetland managers especially on environmental education
strategies that could help the Wetland Centre develop its
education outreach activities. It was also an opportune
time to share Nagenahiru Foundation’s success in promoting
the use of energy-saving lamps by small fisherfolks in Sri
Lanka.

The CLEAR
Partnership was represented at the Conference by Ms. Amy M. Lecciones,
Vice-President of the SCPW and Mr. Edgardo Manda, General
Manager of the LLDA. As one of the Keynote Presentors for Day 1 of
the Conference, Mr. Manda talked about the damages brought about by
the recent typhoon (Ondoy) to the Laguna de Bay and the efforts that
LLDA is taking to prevent such a disaster from happening again.
Ms. Lecciones was appointed rapporteur for the Parallel Round Table
Discussion on Social Dimensions of Lake Management, specifically for
the session on Managing Health Issues (Sanitation, Drinking Water,
etc.). The Conference was held at Chapala, Mexico on 20-25
March 2010.
Prior to the Conference, on 17-18 March 2010, the Annual General
Assembly of Living Lakes Network members was held. Members
reported on their accomplishments vis-a-vis their set lake goals
covering the period 2005-2010. Ms. Lecciones presented the key
accomplishments of the CLEAR Partnership citing key activities such
as the holding of the 10th Living Lakes Conference, 12
Youth Ecological Camps, Fourth Youth Congresses, and on-going
projects in about 75 schools in 11 lakeshore towns.
