Anatidae Site Network in the East Asian Flyway

|  back  |  HOME  |

The Site Network was launched at a ceremony organized by Wetlands International and Environment Agency of Japan on 14 May 1999, in conjunction with the 7th Meeting of the Contracting Parties of Ramsar convention (San Jose, Costa Rica, 10-18 May 1999). It was hosted by Okinawa Prefecture, Naha City and Tomigusuku Village of Japan, with nearly 200 participants present.

An official web site of the Site Network in English and Japanese was launched at the same time, hosted by the Japanese Association for Wild Geese Protection (JAWGP), a member of Wetlands International – Japan.

GOAL

The goal of the Site Network is to ensure the long-term conservation of migratory Anatidae populations in the East Asian Flyway through recognition and appropriate management of a network of sites of international importance.

NATURE OF THE SITE NETWORK

The Site Network is a co-operative international programme for the conservation of Anatidae populations and their habitats, and is a network of both sites and people.   It assists conservation activities of site owners, managers, participating organizations and local people.

The Site Network enables them to obtain international recognition for the importance of their site and their conservation efforts.

ACTIVITIES

Site management bodies / national agencies promote appropriate management of a site through development of a site management plan and other measures, promote the local recognition of the importance of the site for the conservation of Anatidae populations through the awareness and educational programmes. Participation in exchange of information, knowledge and people through the Site Network will help these activities.

Flyway Officer assists the activities through facilitating communication and information exchange and providing advice.

The Site Network provides information on their activities through newsletters and on the Internet and promotes the nomination of other sites of international importance.

JOINING THE Site Network

A site management body prepares the nomination document and the national government proposes for the nomination to Wetlands International.

BIOLOGICAL CRITERIA TO QUALIFY AS A Network Site

It regularly supports >20,000 migratory Anatidae populations; or
It regularly supports >1% of the individuals in a population of one species or subspecies migratory in the family of Anatidae; or
It supports appreciable numbers of a migratory Anatidae population in unfavorable conservation status.

SUPPORT AND ADMINISTRATION

The Anatidae Working Group has been established by the Migratory Waterbird Conservation Committee to oversee the implementation of Anatidae Site Network. It has a membership drawn from government, non-government organizations and experts actively involved in Anatidae conservation in the East Asian Flyway.
