Developing Lumban Delta as an Eco-Tourism Site:
   a Design Competition

       CLEAR and the ASAPHIL (Association of Architectural Students of the Philippines) - UP Diliman Chapter organized a design competition known as "Developing the Lumban Delta as an Eco-Tourism Site: A Design Competition".  The competition has the following objectives:
  • The organizers with Mayor Wilfredo Paraiso and the MPDO, Mr. Himoc.to create awareness among college students on the concept of sustainable development in the context of lake conservation and management and how these relate to the fields of architecture, tourism, and the environment
  • to showcase the talents of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design students
  • to encourage the youth, particularly college students, to be active participants in the building of a sustainable future
  • to promote a participatory approach for key stakeholders in the planning and implementation of an architectural project.

Launching of the Competition

       To officially launch the Competition, a symposium on "A Sustainable Future in Architecture, Eco-Tourism, and Environment" was held at the University of the Philippines.  The symposium featured distinguished speakers in their respective fields who discussed concepts such as- 
  • Landscape Architecture for Eco-Tourism (Arch. Zenaida Galingan)
  • Principles of Eco-tourism (Mr. Carlos Libosado)
  • Environmental Planning (Arch. Requito Bellosillo)
  • Green Architecture (Arch. Joven Ignacio

A special lecture on Laguna Culture and Identity was given by Ms. Felice Prudente Sta. Maria.  It was attended by architecture students from various schools in Metro Manila.

Site Visit with the Competition Participants
12 December 2004

       The organizers took the competition participants to Lumban, Laguna on 12 December 2004. The trip aimed to help the competition participants to have an actual view of the Lumban Delta.  In order for them to learn more about the community, a short dialogue with the community leaders was arranged by the local government.

Recognition of the Winners

       During the 10th Living Lakes Conference held at the Sampaguita Hall of Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City in May 2005, the CLEAR partners and the Mayor of the Municipality of Lumban, Hon. Wilfredo Paraiso presented the winners to the conference participants and the press.

       The winning scale models of the Lumban Delta Design Competition were the centerpiece of the exhibit at the lobby of Taal Vista Hotel during the 5-day 10th Living Lakes Conference.
